Pedal steel / country steel guitar multi-mic phase: close vs room, amp, and board fold

Close mics on pedal steel feel thick in the booth and on stage wedges. On club PA, studio mono fold, or livestream, body and sustain often thin or cancel against amp, room, and board paths that carry the same steel a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between close and amp/room, plus a stereo steel bed that was never folded before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo steel beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a pedal steel compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the stream or PA bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What pedal steel phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / PA / mix bus (not only booth headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B close steel muted vs open under amp/room/board. Note what disappears: body, low swells, cry, attack.
  3. Solo pairs: close vs amp, steel vs room, stereo steel bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with steel muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between close steel and amp / room / board

Flip close vs amp, or steel vs room, when body or low swells return immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: guitar dual-cab, acoustic guitar multi-mic.

2. Small delay align close to the amp / room image

Close mics often arrive earlier than amp or room. A few samples of delay on the close (or nudge to the hero amp image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero steel image to the stream or PA bus

Do not send close, amp, room, and board all hot into the livestream or PA. Pick a hero image (often the amp mic or a focused close+amp blend), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on phone fold. Related: bluegrass / string-band.

4. Prefer hero amp/room as the body; quieter color close

The close should color string detail and proximity, not replace the hero image for the stream mix. If the close sits at full level under a loud amp, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull the close first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on steel beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low end and body centered for stream and PA.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo steel bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Studio / club / livestream checklist (to send)

1. Label close vs amp vs room vs board paths

Name close mic, amp mic, room, and board/DI so operators know what hits the livestream or PA. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full steel

Solo body and low swells in mono. Then open cry and attack in mono. Note fights between close color and hero body.

3. Watch phone, car BT, and PA destinations

Most remote viewers and many dancers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: live FOH, club / PA, car / BT.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before show

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity close vs amp/room/board → delay-align close → one hero steel image → quieter close under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full steel → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a steel bed → fold again for stream / PA / club send.
